Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead: solo survival decisions

A free, open-source survival RPG for players who want detailed decisions about supplies, danger and preparation. A deliberately different, turn-based solo alternative.

Know before you play

No Valheim-style real-time co-op or third-person combat. Use the project’s free stable downloads; commercial community distributions are a separate route.

Use the project download rather than assuming a store price

The official site links stable and experimental builds, and the project publishes its source openly. Follow those download routes when your requirement is a free version. A commercial or community-managed distribution is a separate installation choice; its presence does not make the project’s own download a paid game. Confirm the platform and release label before selecting a package.

Start stable and use the built-in help

The project recommends stable releases for a less buggy experience and identifies a tutorial in the Special menu. Our suggested first-session goal is modest: learn the interface, understand your immediate supplies and decide whether turn-based survival appeals to you. Avoid beginning with a large custom-mod setup if you are still evaluating the basic experience. That recommendation is about reducing setup uncertainty, not a claim of hands-on testing.

Presentation and performance need separate decisions

Tilesets change how the world is displayed and can increase memory demands. We do not turn old anecdotal hardware reports into a modern performance guarantee. Choose a build and display option that suit your machine, then assess it yourself. Shortlist this game for solo planning and systemic survival; choose Muck or Unturned when the requirement is a real-time group session.

Getting started

  1. Open the official stable releases page and select your platform.
  2. Choose stable unless you specifically want experimental features and bugs.
  3. Use the tutorial and in-game help to learn the interface.
  4. Evaluate a local solo session before adding mods or changing distribution.
