Veloren: fantasy exploration

A genuinely free, open-source action RPG for mountain climbing, dungeon trips and adventuring with friends. Start here if the fantasy journey matters more than building a longhouse.

Know before you play

It is an RPG-first alternative. Do not choose it expecting Valheim’s everyday survival base building.

What carries over from Valheim?

The strongest connection is the invitation to set out into a large world with equipment and a destination. Veloren’s developers describe varied environments, caves, dungeons, bosses and multiplayer servers. That makes it a useful choice for someone whose favourite part of a survival game is leaving camp to see what lies beyond the next ridge. The voxel landscape is a visual difference, rather than a promise of Minecraft-style play.

The important difference: adventuring before homesteading

Valheim combines exploration with a home that supplies the next expedition. Veloren’s official overview centres on combat, NPC towns and crafting equipment. Its documented build mode is a server administration feature; it should not be confused with gathering wood and constructing a permanent house through ordinary progression. If your group mainly wants a shared building project, compare Wurm Online or Haven & Hearth before downloading.

Playing alone or with friends

The project offers a single-player option and multiplayer, including running your own server. Use the official Airshipper launcher to keep the installation current. For a group, agree on a server and compatible game version before planning the session. A public server and a private server are different commitments: the former offers an existing community, while the latter leaves hosting and administration to your group.

What “free” means here

Veloren is a community-developed open-source game. Its official download path does not ask you to purchase Valheim or buy a commercial base game. That makes it fundamentally different from a free mod that needs a paid copy of another game. Follow the project’s own download links rather than a third-party “free RPG” installer.

Who should put it on their shortlist?

Choose Veloren when your non-negotiables are a fantasy setting, action combat and the option to adventure together without an entry price. Put it lower on the list if the real requirement is farming, structural building, survival logistics or recreating a Viking settlement. Being precise about that distinction is more useful than calling every open-world game a Valheim replacement.

Getting started

  1. Open the official download page and choose the Airshipper build for your operating system.
  2. Check graphics API support as well as RAM; a low-poly look is not a hardware guarantee.
  3. Launch a solo world or agree on a multiplayer server with your friends.
  4. Use the linked manual for controls, hosting and troubleshooting.
