Is Valheim free? What the alternatives actually cost

Valheim’s official Steam page offers the game for purchase. A free alternative should be labelled by what you can actually get without buying the base game.

Valheim itself is a paid game

Use the official Steam listing to check the current price in your region. This site does not quote a fixed price because regional prices and discounts can change. A temporary promotion, subscription catalogue or free weekend would have its own conditions; none should be described as a permanently free copy of Valheim.

A free current game: Veloren or Muck

Veloren’s official download and Muck’s free Steam listing offer no-cost entry to their own games. They do not require buying Valheim. They also offer different experiences: Veloren focuses on action-RPG exploration, while Muck is a survival roguelike with crafting and base building. Pick by the activity, not just the zero price.

Free with account or store conditions

Wurm Online’s free-account skill ceiling is 20. Haven & Hearth offers full free gameplay but sells account benefits that include inventory space and development-rate changes. Once Human is free to play and discloses in-app purchases. Those are all legitimate free-entry options, but they answer a stricter “no paid advantages or restrictions” requirement differently.

More free routes, with different conditions

VoxeLibre is a free open-source game installed through Luanti. Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead supplies free builds through its project website, separate from commercial community distributions. Unturned’s Steam base game is free with optional purchases. Ryzom’s official online service has a level-125 free ceiling and a separate premium tier. Read those conditions before treating all ten entries as interchangeable no-cost offers.

A free old release: UnReal World

The official download page supplies version 3.71 as a previous version and directs readers to commercial stores for the latest release. The download is not a fake, but its age is part of the offer. Our catalogue gives it a separate legacy label so you can choose knowingly. It is a solo wilderness alternative, not a co-op replacement.

Mods and demos need their own labels

A free mod can still require a paid base game. A demo can be free while the complete game costs money. Before downloading either, check what is required to launch it, whether progress is limited and which parts of the full game are available. This catalogue does not use demos or paid-game mods to inflate its free-game count.

Choose the constraint you actually mean

If you mean “no payment before trying,” all ten catalogue entries have a documented route, with the legacy caveat for UnReal World. If you mean “no commercial progression tier,” start by examining Veloren and Muck. If you mean “a free game that reproduces every Valheim system,” this guide does not claim one exists. The comparison table exposes the compromises instead.
